When Should You Enroll in Medicare?

Initial Enrollment, Annual Enrollment and Special Enrollment Periods explained, plus the dates that matter most.

Most people first become eligible for Medicare around their 65th birthday, during a seven-month Initial Enrollment Period that begins three months before the birthday month and ends three months after it.

Each fall there is also an Annual Enrollment Period, when you can change plans for the coming year. This is a good moment to review whether your prescriptions, providers or health needs have shifted enough to justify a change.

Special Enrollment Periods apply after certain life events, such as moving, losing employer coverage or other qualifying changes. If you are unsure which window applies to you, a short conversation is usually enough to map out the dates.
